The Auburn reunion committee would like to thank everyone for
sharing our 50th class reunion and walking down memory lane with us.
We hope you had a wonderful time sharing memories and catching up on
friendships. We would like to extend an invitation to everyone to share
thoughts about the evening and suggestions for future reunions. For those
who took pictures, we encourage you to put them on your web page.
We are always looking for new ideas so anyone who might like to take part
in the fun of planning our next reunion, please let us know. Many class members
expressed their concern that this might be our last major event but nothing has
been decided on that issue. An event like Sat. night is much easier when the ef-
forts are shared by many so please, feel free to come and help.
Once again, a very special thanks to everyone who shared in making it a
Knight to Remember!

Great news! We have a brand new Classmate Profiles format on our class web site. The new format is much more dynamic and engaging and I think you'll really enjoy it.
Log into the site and click your "Edit Profile" link to see the changes. You can now do some new things like:
- Upload a "Then" photo of how you looked in your high school years.
- Upload a "Now" photo showing what you look like today. It's interesting seeing the Then & Now photos side by side.
- Upload a "Yearbook" photo (if one has not already been provided)
- Click the photo gallery icon in the upper right to add more Profile photos. It's now faster and easier to add any photos you want.
- Click the videos tab then paste in a video link, such as a Youtube video link (just copy the web address of the video from your browser's address bar). Voila, the video has been added to your Profile!
- Quickly toggle back and forth from Profile Edit view to Profile Preview view by clicking the button at the top of your Profile.
The Profile display now includes 2 new engaging features:
- Classmates can make comments on various items throughout your Profile. Give it a look! If you prefer others not comment on your Profile items you can remove the ability to comment by clicking Edit Profile and turning off the Comments feature.
- A "Latest Interactions" section is now included. This is an aggregation of interactions you have made around the web site. Note this new section is not displaying behavioral tracking. For instance where you go and what you do on the site is private, and not listed here. Latest Interactions only displays an aggregation of interactions already available on other areas of the web site.
Please log into the web site and take a look at both your Profile Edit screen and the Profile Display. I hope you enjoy these great new features!

Tuesday, May 4, 2010
This is what the world looks like when you have cataracts rated at 17 on the Richter Scale.
OK, I made that up. It's really our birthday boy's hot rod as seen through the bathroom window. Click the picture after midnight and see what it really looks like.
Hmmmm. I wonder what the weather's like in Rockford?
It pays to be nice.
One morning in December, you may have seen the video of my car flipping over on Guilford Road. If you missed it click here to re-live that exciting moment, we had about 9 inches of the heaviest, wettest snowfalls I've ever seen. Our friends called and asked if I'd clean their driveway. Of course I said yes. The "P-Man" thought I'd come over with some sort of plow or my snowblower. The snow was way too heavy so I did it by hand.
Lucky for me I have a bent-handle shovel so I'm not constantly bending over risking a heart attack. Anyway when I got done shoveling, having some coffee and eating apple pie, they gave me a Toro snowblower they hadn't used for several years.
Randy Molander's mother, Stella, passed away Monday.
Stella M. Molander, 91, of Rockford died Feb. 1, 2010, in Alden Park Strathmoor. Service at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, in Olson Funeral and Cremation Services Ltd., Fred C. Olson Chapel, 1001 Second Ave., with visitation from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. in the chapel; Pastor Sandi Olson Decker will officiate. Burial in Arlington Cemetery.
I just read Cheryl Peacock's tribute to her on the online guestbook.
Here's Cheryl's remembrances of Randy's mother.
"Stella was my second mother when I was in grade school. I remember the wonderful lunches she fixed - grilled cheese sandwiches, Swedish pancakes, and the yummy Christmas cookies with the red and green sugar sprinkles on the ends. Stella was one of my mom's best friends. Now Stella and mom will finally be able to enjoy a cup of tea and chat."
What a wonderful mother and lady she must have been. Our deepest condolences to you and your family.
Seth Miller, our friend and classmate. Funeral services Saturday, February 6, 2010
A celebration of life at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, in Allen Chapel AME Church, 3000 Rural St., with visitation from 9 a.m. to time of service. Arrangements completed by Collins and Stone Funeral Home, 3993 W. State St.
All year we bitch and moan about the government. Now's our chance to do something about it. Vote the bastards in. Vote the bastards out. Either way....vote. Remember those who gave so much to defend our right to vote.
Once upon a time I knew someone who always complained about the government. One election day a friend asked, "Did you vote." The reply, "No, why should I?" Well, there's a lot of people who'd love to trade places with you.
Thanks to Ron from Grand Island, Pete from Rockford, and Bill from the Left Coast. At our reunion we all agreed. Semper Fi, Buy American, and Vote.
And for those of you who live in Chicago, vote early and vote often.
Dave Nygren: Army veteran, husband, father, friend, meter reader, and birthday boy. The above flyover that knocked you out of bed wasn't meant for you. The Air Force had Col. Arthur You-know-who do a flyover for Bob Kinney's birthday. Only three problems: wrong day, wrong house, wrong guy.
In government lingo it's called a SNAFU. "Situation Normal All Fouled Up" All you have to do is reimburse the government for the planes and the jet fuel. That'll be $48,546.99 please. (Hey, someone's got to pay when the government screws up.)
Happy Birthday Dave. Hopefully you'll come to the next reunion and see what really goes on. And thanks for reading our meter all those years.
Art Harriott, Top Gun. Auburn graduate, 28 years in the Air Force serving our country, father, husband and all-around good guy. From spy planes to satellites; jet planes over Boznia, from Desert Storm to the Caribbean, Art's been there leading the way.
I'd suggest everyone read Art's profile....it's one of the most impressive I've ever seen. It impressed the hell out of me.
If you've got his number give him a call. If you've got a plane, give him a buzz. Happy
Birthday Top Gun.... and look to the skies.
Tim Legue, Friend and Classmate Died Last Thursday
Timothy W. Legue, age 64, died on Thursday, January 21, 2010. He's survived by his wife, Mary, one daughter, 3 sons, a sister, Norma, and brother Jeffrey. Tim also had 14 grandkids and 12 great-grandchildren. His sister is married to another of our classmates Dallas Boothe. A memorial service was held Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010 in Rock Church, 6732 Harrison Ave. in Rockford, Illinois.
On behalf of our class I'd like to extend our sincere sympathy to his wife and family. Classmates, please feel free to send any information about Tim you'd like to see posted here or on his "In Memory" page.
Hey Bob in case you forgot, today's your birthday. And to help celebrate it, your former wingmen sent me a movie from when you enlisted.
I heard Rod e-mailed his good friend, the President, and got him to order a flyby of F-15's over your house at 0600 Saturday morning in honor of your career.
Thanks for doing such a great job making the class reunion a big success.
Bob McGeachie... Husband, Father, Doctor, Friend and Grandpa? His life's work has been helping others and saving lives. He's a well-known Specialist in Radiology and Neuroradiology. His quest for knowledge never ends. All this because of two life-changing encounters: One with a Corvair and the other as a result of his friendship with John Shumate
If you've read his profile you'll know he's been studying "Hair Transplants for Dummies." He seems to be on the right track and he looks quite a bit younger. WOW. I'm heading for Minnesota.
Dr. Bob, I hope you enjoyed your birthday, your new hair and Louie Louie. We gotta go.
Like music, this year will probably go from one extreme to another. Some of what happens we'll like and understand, and some of it we'll think "What the hell is that all about?"
And hopefully we'll all be here to celebrate the next New Year.
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
Merry Christmas to One and All.

Happy Birthday Joe. When we going to Kentucky again? Make sure you click on Joe's picture to read more about him.
David Hurd, MD
"Today's world owes a great debt of gratitude to medical pioneers who have been on the cutting edge of medical breakthroughs: Dr. Jonas Salk, Dr. Michael Debakey, Dr. Louis Pasteur and Dr. David Hurd." Yes, our own David Hurd, Class of '64.
He could have used that big hunk of grey matter to become a mega-banker; a sports agent; a real estate tycoon or a politician. Luckily for us and the rest of humanity David had a better idea... "To serve mankind."
I'm sure thousands of cancer patients have benefitted from David Hurd's research; his life's work may have saved you or me. In 2007 I had colon cancer surgery at Mayo Clinic and my doctors may have learned something from his hard work.
Click this link to read what I think are some of Dr. Hurd's published papers. It's pretty serious stuff. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what this link leads to.
Hopefully someone will call 1-555-HEY-DAVE and sing in his ear but it won't be me. Serenading Sue Curry's answering machine was enough excitement for me. Tequila works in strange ways.
Happy Birthday and Merry Caduceus to you and your family.
Thanks Dr. Hurd... I owe you one. We all owe you one.
Gean Moore celebrates the BIG ONE
He turns 65 years old today and if you have his phone number call him right before midnight and sing him to sleep.
Gean Moore: Auburn Graduate, Marine Corps Veteran, Deputy Sheriff: Happy Birthday to you and Thanksgiving couldn't have fallen on a better day for your whole family and friends to be thankful for you and for your life's work, not only as a Marine but as a policeman facing constant danger every day.
Sue Curry, let's fly away
Where ever you are today I hope you have a very happy birthday. I wish you nothing but Blue Skies and CAVU.
Be ready for one surprise phone call serenading you today. Or maybe two or three or who knows. Call her at 1-555-FLY-GIRL. Embarass yourself and make her day.
Diane McClelland's list of things to do today.
1. Celebrate like it's my birthday. Don't ask.....
2. Take wonderful husband out to dinner.
3. Tell boss she can take this job and shove it.
Just one of these events in pretty scary. But to have all three at the same day? Wow. Happy Birthday.
Things to do next week. SLEEP LATE. SHOP. ENJOY LIFE.
Brigitte and Rod Schwandt at
LZ Peace Memorial, Rockford
|
Rod and Brigitte Schwandt spent part of this beautiful Veterans Day at the LZ Peace Memorial in Rockford, Illinois. Here's some pictures of what they saw. And while I'm not sure what they heard: whether it be the sounds of silence; Hueys coming in; or Angels' wings fluttering overhead, they heard something we all missed.
I want to thank my friends Roger Burt, "Skip" Coad and Randy MacCloskey for their inspiration. Your encouragement and support do make a difference.
Veterans Day has special memories for Randy MacCloskey. Here's what "Mouse" had to say. "For what it's worth...I was in the Seabees (CBMU 301) in Vietnam and spent a few days at Khe Sanh during the Tet offensive and from there I was transferred to the hospital in DaNang. This was early February '68. I stayed at the hospital until early or mid April (things were kinda foggy at the time) and then returned to the base at Dong Ha. Came back to Mudville in June '68 and then went to Kenitra, Morocco for 13 months before discharge. The Khe Sanh movie still brings goose bumps."
Lastly, I don't know any Air Force jargon so all I can say is "Rod and Brigitte, you be 'da man."
Shhhhhh.... Listen....
Hueys over LZ Peace Memorial
Memorial Day 2009, Midway Village Rockford
LZ Peace Memorial, Memorial Day 2009. Midway Village, Rockford, Illinois The sound of the helicopter flying overhead.
"Skip" Coad our Marine in Vietnam said: There's no other sound like it. To us it meant, "We might get outta here alive" as opposed to, "We don't have a fucking chance." Pretty blunt language but he's a Marine.
Here's the story of Dave Cumming which bears re-reading. I hope everyone reads his profile. While serving in Vietnam, Dave went inside a burning airplane. A burning airplane. He risked his life to save another's. It could have been any of you Vietnam veterans. Or your brother, or your sister the nurse, your uncle or your aunt. Whoever Dave went in for could be someone you love. It could have been you and you don't even know it.
It might be that man with the burned face your kids always avoided. You just don't know. What kind of man goes into a burning hell? Someone like Hootenanny-loving Dave Cumming that's who. Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines. That's what they do.
When you get to the reunion look around at all the Vietnam Veterans; Some have scars you can see. Some have scars only they can see. They were young once and ran through their own burning hell. Stand By Them. Stand By Them. (written Sat., May 16, 2009. Revises Veterans Day 2009)
Pride of America, Real American Heroes
top row: Tom Zander, Dave Kerno, Dave Nygren, David Hurd, Dennis Dahl 2nd row; Bill "Skip" Coad, Bob Kinney, Dave Cumming, Gean Moore, Gene Long. 3rd row: Jim Stroup, Joe Musso, Randy MacCloskey, Richard Hoffman, Roger Burt. 4th row: Ron Sisley, Sam Pagano, Tom Herschlag, Bob Kinney (again), Lee Herdman. 5th row: Old Glory, Fred Turner, Steve Holcomb, Jerry Strand, Wallis Patterson.
Do you ever wonder where your some of your old friends are? Some of them are still right here in Rockford. They're easy to find. Go out to Midway Village and visit the LZ Peace Memorial. Look at the Huey on the Hill. See the wall and all its names in hallowed glory.
Go ahead. Walk up to the wall. It ain't gonna bite. In fact it's been waiting for you. Find an old friend and run your hand over his name. "Hey buddy, I been lookin' all over for you. How ya doin'? Man, we did some shit, huh? Now that I've found you I'll come back more often. Semper Fi."
Shhhhh. Quiet. If you listen real hard you might hear the sound of helicopters coming in. Or it could be the sound of angels.
How do we live? How do we ever survive?
Two weeks ago our friend Cheryl Peacock's husband, Karl, died. While I'm sure many of you have remained close friends with her and Karl, I'd never met him and except for the last class reunion I hadn't seen her for about ten years. However, several days before the class reunion Cheryl joked with me in an e-mail about teaching us all line dancing, our surgeries, and how we're both survivors.
I thought about the girl I remembered from high school and her husband, her passion for line dancing and the music that goes with it, and of how much she gave of herself at the reunion. That's when I found this song and its big question. How do we live and how do we survive?
Because of Cheryl about twenty dancers including Rita Boothe, Shirley, Kathy and Barb, Terry, Becky, and Sandy, Diane McClelland, and Bob Kinney all had a night they won't soon forget. Wendi and Tony Choppi and his cowboy boots may have danced a little bit too. Ron Eakes had me take pictures of Bob Kinney's crazy hat, and Bill Coad's free drinks were great but Cheryl and her line dancers were the biggest memory for a lot of us.
So give Cheryl a call, send her an email, or drop her a line. Keep her in your thoughts and prayers. Keep her in your life and keep her in your heart.
That's how we live. That's how we survive.
